About

Practical Banff ideas, kept useful.

banff.tips is a small, locally-run guide. Not a directory, not a tourist brochure — just the spots we'd actually send a friend.

Method

How we pick

The site is for people already in Banff, trying to make a call — not a research project, a phone check before heading out the door.

  • How we pick.

Every spot has to earn your time. We skip places that only look good as filler, and anything we wouldn't actually send a friend to.

  • What freshness means here.

Public freshness is simple — "Updated Jul 8." For anything time-sensitive, we note it and link straight to the operator or park page. Mountain Banff changes fast.

  • Why the planner exists.

Banff is easy to over-plan or under-plan. The homepage planner helps you put a rough order on your day — not replace the experience of actually being there.

What's here

Practical visitor guidance: where to eat, what to do today, route friction, weather-aware backups, and links that help you confirm details directly.

What we leave out

No paid placement labels disguised as picks, no internal data tags, no raw check-in timestamps, and no pretending volatile details are permanent.

Method

How we cross-check

Nothing on this site is a single source. For each pick we read the venue's own page, cross-check against authoritative sources, and link out so you can confirm before you go. The links in every card are the ones we'd open ourselves.

  • Venue pages first.

Hours, menus, and current specials come from the venue's own site or social when their own page is sparse. We don't paraphrase aggregator listings.

  • Outdoors via Parks Canada and the Town.

Trail conditions, closures, access rules, and seasonal notes link to Parks Canada and the Town of Banff. Weather links to Environment Canada; roads to 511 Alberta.

  • Updated Jul 8.

A weekly editorial pass on picks and copy, with same-day cross-checks before anything time-sensitive (events, hours, deals) lands on the home page.

  • When we're not sure, we say so.

“Check before going,” “subject to change,” and “confirm directly” are not throwaway phrases — they appear only on fields we know move week to week.

Worth knowing

Banff changes quickly. Weather, staffing, closures, events, and access rules can move faster than a small guide can. Use this site to choose a smart direction, then confirm hours, bookings, road conditions, and trail notices before committing.

Land acknowledgement

On Treaty 7 territory

In the spirit of respect, reciprocity, and truth, we honour and acknowledge that the townsite of Banff is located on traditional Treaty 7 territory. These sacred lands are a gathering place for the Niitsitapi from the Blackfoot Confederacy, of whom the Siksika, Kainai, and Piikani First Nations are part; the Îyârhe Nakoda of the Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations; the Tsuut'ina First Nation; the Métis Nation of Alberta, and many others whose histories, languages, and cultures continue to enrich our vibrant community. The Bow Valley has also long been important to the Ktunaxa and Secwépemc First Nations who traditionally occupied lands and used the watersheds of the Columbia and Kootenay Rivers and the eastern slopes of the Rockies. The area was also used by the Mountain Cree clan of Chief Peechee, and the Dene of the far north and far south. The Town of Banff is continuously learning about the rich and complex histories of Indigenous peoples in this region and is working to refine how the organization can better understand and acknowledge Indigenous peoples that have and continue to contribute to the area. We recognize the land as an act of reconciliation and gratitude to those whose territory we reside on or are visiting and acknowledge the many First Nations and Métis who have lived in and cared for these lands for generations.
