Plan notes
Best for
People who liked the Lower Falls and still want a real half-day walk.
Pair with
Johnston Canyon Lower Falls, Bow Valley Parkway viewpoints, or a simple Banff dinner.
Access
From Johnston Canyon Day-use Area, plan for 11 km return, 425 m ascent, and about four hours. Parking and bus access are both season-sensitive.
Season
Best as a snow-free hike. Winter can be beautiful, but ice and traction turn it into a different decision.
Safety
The canyon section is straightforward; the extra distance to the Ink Pots is where tired legs and timing start to matter.
Wildlife
Travel together, carry bear spray and know how to use it, and check current Parks Canada trail conditions before leaving.
No-car note
Seasonal Roam Route 9 may serve Johnston Canyon; confirm the current schedule before relying on it.
