Plan notes
Best for
Experienced scramblers comfortable with exposure and route-finding.
Pair with
Larch Valley or Sentinel Pass on lighter days from the same trailhead.
Access
Route follows Larch Valley to Sentinel Pass, then scree and three rock bands to the summit. Moraine Lake shuttle required.
Season
Late July through August once the upper mountain is snow-free. Check the south ridge from Banff Avenue — if snow is visible, expect to turn back.
Safety
Crux at the second rock band is exposed; a fall can be fatal. Helmet recommended for rockfall from parties above. Crampons and an ice axe may be needed in early or late season. Turn around if conditions degrade.
Wildlife
Bear habitat the entire approach through Larch Valley. Group restrictions may apply.
No-car note
Personal vehicles are not permitted at Moraine Lake — shuttle only.
