Use this as a quick pre-flight check after the route looks right. It is reference material, not the main planner.
Park once for town. Use shuttles for lake days when pressure is high.
- Pick a primary lot and a backup before you drive in.
Lake Louise parking fees are separate from park admission.
Admission, parking, shuttle seats, and Kananaskis are separate decisions.
- Check whether your travel dates fall inside the 2026 free-admission window.
Free admission does not mean free parking or free reservations.
Cluster the day along one Roam route, not across town.
- Lock in your last return bus first, then plan around it.
Schedules and crowding shift by season — check the day-of.
Large vehicles need a parking plan before they aim for Lake Louise.
- Check size limits before choosing a lake lot.
Oversized vehicles and RVs cannot park at Lake Louise Lakeshore public lots.
Pick your access method first — it sets the whole day.
- Confirm current access rules and eligible shuttles.
Private vehicles are restricted at Moraine year-round.
Stop before long drives, transit legs, or trailheads.
- Anchor stops at visitor centres and major trailheads.
Trailhead facilities often close Oct–May.
Check conditions the morning of — not the night before.
- Check 511 Alberta for road closures before you leave.
Closures can drop in overnight — recheck at the trailhead.
Pair every outdoor plan with an indoor backup.
- Check the alpine forecast, not just the town one.
Summer storms can drop temps 15°C in an hour.
Book transport first; build meals and stops around it.
- Screenshot confirmations and ID — service may be offline.
Late arrivals lose their seat — no refund, no exceptions.

Locals know
Six small things that save the day.
Lake Louise fills before sunrise
In July–August the lot is full by 6 a.m. Use the Park & Ride shuttle from the ski hill — faster than circling.
Moraine Lake = no private cars
Year-round. Book the Parks Canada shuttle, a commercial bus, or bike up early.
Weather flips fast above tree line
Pack a shell, gloves, and a layer even on bluebird mornings. Afternoon thunderstorms are normal in summer.
Eat early or book ahead
Town dinner spots fill from 6 p.m. on weekends. Lunch around 11:30 or dinner before 5:30 = no wait.
Wildlife is real, not scenery
Stay 100 m from bears and elk, 30 m from everything else. Carry bear spray on any backcountry trail.
Cell service is patchy
Download offline maps and your itinerary before leaving town. The Bow Valley Parkway has long dead zones.
