Banff trail and road closures: what to check

• Three rules catch visitors out most often: no personal vehicles on Moraine Lake Road, the Bow Valley Parkway’s dated wildlife closures, and short-notice wildlife restrictions.
• If a route, trail, shuttle, or road is the reason for the trip, check Parks Canada, 511 Alberta, Roam, or Town of Banff before locking the day.
• Most attractions in town are year-round. Most backcountry-adjacent things are seasonal.

• Banff town remains a useful base across seasons, but individual museums, attractions, restaurants, and shops publish their own hours and closure dates.
• Banff Gondola, Upper Hot Springs, Cave and Basin, and the Whyte Museum each require a direct operating-hours check; do not treat one attraction's calendar as the town's calendar.
• Roam Route 8X is year-round, while several recreation routes are seasonal. Check the exact route rather than relying on a generic transit claim.

• Sunshine sightseeing, Lake Louise tea houses, alpine routes, and Moraine Lake transport all publish separate seasonal calendars. Confirm the operator or Parks Canada page for the exact date.
• Larch colour and alpine trail conditions do not follow a guaranteed calendar. Use current conditions and keep another route ready.
• Parks Canada can add wildlife restrictions, group-size requirements, or closures during the operating season. A summer date is not an access guarantee.
• Outside a route's normal summer window, treat snow, ice, avalanche exposure, daylight, and seasonal services as a fresh go/no-go decision.

• Johnston Canyon can become icy; Parks Canada strongly recommends ice cleats when surfaces are icy. Check the current trail report before leaving.
• Natural ice is not monitored or guaranteed safe. Use only a maintained, currently open skating surface and follow posted guidance.
• Sunshine Village, Lake Louise Ski Resort, and Mt. Norquay each control their own season and lift status. Check the resort directly.
• A signed summer trail is not automatically a safe winter route. Use route-specific winter and avalanche guidance before leaving the frontcountry.

• Moraine Lake Road: personal vehicles are not permitted year-round. Use a Parks Canada shuttle, Roam or another permitted commercial service, or travel by bike when conditions and rules allow.
• Bow Valley Parkway / Hwy 1A: Parks Canada lists an annual all-activity wildlife closure on the 17 km section east of Johnston Canyon Campground from March 1 to June 25, 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. Check the official closure page before using the corridor.
• Banff Avenue: residents voted against the annual summer pedestrian zone on August 12, 2024, and Council rescinded the annual program on August 26. The 100 and 200 blocks reopened to vehicles in September 2024; check Town of Banff alerts for temporary closures.

• Parks Canada can close or restrict trails on short notice when bears or other wildlife are active. Check current bulletins and trail conditions for the exact area.
• Group-of-four advisories: when an area sees frequent bear activity, Parks Canada may require hiking in groups of four or more. Check the trail-conditions report the morning of.
• Calving elk (mid-May to mid-June) make town and gondola-base trails more dangerous. Stay 30 m back from any elk; mothers will charge if you cross their line.

• For 2026, Parks Canada releases 40% of Lake Louise/Moraine shuttle seats on April 15 and 60% at 8:00 am MDT two days before departure. Confirm the current reservation page before relying on that schedule.
• Parks Canada admission is free through September 7, 2026 and regular admission resumes September 8; parking and shuttle products remain separate checks.
• Tea-house hours, opening dates, payment methods, and item availability are operator details. Confirm directly before making one the meal plan.
• Restaurant shoulder season: late October to mid-November and mid-April to mid-May are the quietest months. Some restaurants reduce hours or close for short maintenance windows. Confirm before heading to a specific one.
